FOREWORD

Prof. G. P. Thakur

President, Indian Academy of Applied Psychology

The claim of scientific psychology that human behavior is a changeable phenomenon, and that the task of scientific psychology is to establish that how and by what it is conditioned (as a function of the surrounding society) remained the inherent objective of the book" Studies in Applied Psychology". The book is collection of the representative and diverse articles edited by Dr. Panch Ramalingam in the field of applied psychology.

The concurrent theme in each of the papers is the importance of understanding the shared beliefs and values of a culture, and potential roles of socio cultural values in determining(and predicting)behavior of both social and applied significance. And at time(and places),that content organization of the papers give the impression that both theory and empirical observations modify each other, and that is how the logical frames of analysis has evolved towards unmasking the nature in general, and behavioral sciences in particular, and in the development indigenous models of behavior organization(and management).

Applied psychology particularly, needs to maintain its distinctiveness as a specialized branch of psychology,in both substance and method. At the same time, applied psychology is part of general psychology, and it will come closer to realizing its potential as its commerce with general psychology increases. For what the book has done to bring together diverse concepts, findings and methods of general psychology with indigenous cultural phenomena, the collection of articles signals an important step forward toward understanding the development of indigenous models of behavior management.

In my own teaching,I found that theoretically and methodologically grinded book(s) of extended research interest(s) on the topic, particularly in Indian context reference were scanty.I strongly feel that the present book while filling the gap(and providing a bridge) between theory and practice adds a step forward toward the furtherance of new horizons of analysis, both theoretical and methodological significance in the field, and would be of much help for post graduate students motivated for further researches in the field of applied psychology.

PREFACE

Dr. Panch. Ramalingam

The empirical studies presented during the 6th International, 37th Indian Academy of Applied Psychology and 3rd Pondicherry Psychology Association conference on the theme Applied Psychology for the World Peace and Prosperity held at Pondicherry between 5th and 7th January 2002 were selected and included 18 papers in the first volume entitled "Applied Psychology for the World Peace and Prosperity" on the basis of nature, substance, thrust and societal importance in applied psychology.
