A Report on the Proceedings of the
2nd International seminar on integral yoga psychology and 6th National Conference on Integral Education

8 and 9 January 2005

The Pondicherry Psychology Association in collaboration with the All India Association for Educational Research organised the Second International seminar on Integral Yoga Psychology and 6th National Conference on Integral Education on 8 and 9 January 2005 at Hotel Ram International, Pondicherry. This annual event brought together scholars and practitioners from across the globe with a common aim to discuss the variety of issues related to the relevance and application of Eastern and Western psychological and spiritual approaches in meeting the challenges facing the humanity. Eighteen Yoga practitioners/ psychologists and academicians from the USA, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Spain, Chezh Republic, Malaysia, and the Netherlands and 68 delegates from various parts of the country attended this conference. In addition to the delegates 28 teachers from colleges and 53 teachers from schools and 147 students from various Teacher Education Colleges also participated. In total two plenary sessions and eight scientific sessions were held.

The Inaugural Session on January 8th commenced with an invocation by the students of Yoangali Natiyalam. Shri J. Arawindhan, Chairman, Achariya College of Education welcomed the dignitaries and delegates, Dr. Panch. Ramalingam, the Organizing Secretary of the conference presented the Scope and Objectives of the conference. The main objectives of the conference were: Discussion of Sri Aurobindo model of Integral Education, Discussion of various models of psychology with special reference to education , Discussion of various indigenous schools of thought in Integral Education , Exploring important issues in making Eastern Integral approaches become a living force for the future, Developing practical strategies to facilitate teaching and learning of Indian Integral approaches in the West.

Prof. A. Gnanam, Former Chairman of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council presided. Following the Indian tradition he lit the Kuttuvilakku (traditional lamp) to inaugurate the seminar and distributed the Best Educationist Award 2004 and Best Teacher Award 2004 to Dr. G. B. Jaiprakash Narain, Director, National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, Chennai, Best Educationist Award 2004 to Yogacharini Meenatchidevi Bhavanani, Chairman, International Centre for Yoga Research, Pondicherry and Best Psychologist award 2004 to Prof Subranshu Kumar Sarkar, Satniniketan. In his inaugural address Prof A.Gnanam, stressed the need for a broad-based approach in the field of psychology. Seminars and conferences organised by professional groups should bring together all aspects of psychology and neurology, He said mass psychology and mass pedagogy should be encouraged, particularly at a time when globalisation was giving rise to several challenges and opportunities. The professional institutions should evolve strategies that would enable the development of psychology in all its formats, as psychology was both an art and a science. Prof. Kittu Reddy of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry delivered special address on Integral Yoga Psychology. While highlighting the important aspects of integral approaches he stressed self development by quoting practical examples in life situations. Prof G.P. Thakur, former President, Indian Academy of Applied Psychology delivered the Keynote address; in his address he said that yoga was a lifestyle and every one of us needs to learn certain skills to teach the younger generation.

Prof. K. V.Kaliappan, Convenor, Federation of Psychology Associations in India presented the citation of the awardees Dr. Nalini Devi of Spain felicitated. Dr. G.B. Jaiprakash Narain, Director NITTTR, Chennai released the souvenir of the conference. Dr. A. M. Sekar, Principal, Achariya College of Education, Pondicherry proposed vote of thanks. The Plenary Session I was held on the theme: Application of Integral Yoga Psychology in Teacher Education Curriculum was chaired by Prof. B. Mukhopadyay, Prof and Head, Dept. of Educational Management, National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, Chennai, Dr. V. Muthu, Chairman, King Nandhivarman College of Arts and Sciences, Thellar, Dr. Anandha Balayogi Bhavanani, Chairman, Yoganjali Natyalayam, Pondicherry led a thought provoking demonstration-lecture session.After lunch break, the concurrent Scientific Session I - Eastern and Western Approaches in Integral Yoga Psychology was chaired by Yogachariya Hariharan, Mrs. Sonya Emily Servine, Australia, Mr. Robert Scott Servine, USA, Ms. Maitrayi, Chennai, Mrs. Helena Hermanokova, the Netherlands presented their papers.

The Scientific Session II – Developing Practical Application of Integral Yoga Psychology was chaired by Dr.N.Balasubramanian, Director, UGC-Academic Staff College, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore and co chaired by Shri G.Kulanthaivelu, Assistant Professor of Electronics, NITTTR, Chennai . Mrs. Jana Ramsley, England, Dr. Claudia Heinen, Germany, Mrs. Martina Kynkorova, Chezh Republic, Mrs. Jennifer Dany Aube, Canada presented their papers.In the Afternoon after tea break, the Scientific Session III– Spirituality and Integral Yoga Psychology was chaired by Dr. B.Viswanathan, Former Dean, Faculty of Education, Annamalai University and co-chaired by Shri G.Kulanthaivel, Assistant Professor of Electronics, NITTTR, Chennai. Mr. Davor Rogic, Chezh Republic, Mr.Alexandro Costantino, Spain, Prof. G.Kulanthaivel, Chennai and Mrs. Ruplekha Gupta, Karagpur presented their papers. The concurrent Scientific Session IV - Integral Yoga Psychology for Common Man was Chaired by Prof.D. Brahadeeswaran, Prof and Head, Dept of Policy Planning and Educational Research, NITTTR, Chennai, and cochaired by Dr.D. Dutta Roy, Indian Institute of Statistical Research, Kolkatta. Mrs. Edith Schacher, Switzerland, Mrs. Guadalupe La Torre, Spain, Mrs. Archana Tulsidas Sachdev, Mumbai, Mrs. Priyadarshini S. Bokil, Mumbai, Prof.D. Brahadeeswaran, Chennai, and Dr.D. Dutta Roy, Kolkatta. presented their papers.

On Sunday, 9th January 2005 at 10.00 am The Plenary Session II was held on the theme: Sri Aurobindo Model of Integral Education was chaired by Prof. V.C. Thomas, Dean, School of Humanities, Pondicherry Univeristy, co-chaired by Rev.Fr.A.S.Antonisamy, Chairman. Centre for Universal Ethics, Pondicherry Prof. Anandh Reddy, Director, Sri Aurobindo Centre for Advanced Research, Pondicherry presented a thought provoking lecture on the theme.The Scientific Session V – Indigenous Schools of Thought on Integral Education was chaired by Dr. Soumitra Basu, Sri Aurobindo International Institute of Integral Health Studies, Kolkata and cochaired by Shri G. Rajasekaran, Principal, DIET, Pondicherry. Dr.S. Desingu, Pondicherry , Mr.E.K. Rajendran, Pondicherry presented their papers.The concurrent Scientific Session VI - Developing Integral Education through Virtual Mode was Chaired by Dr.V. Natarajan, Former Registrar, Pondicherry University and co-chaired by Shri Shaheed Khan, Asst Director, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Bangalore Regional Centre. Dr.M.Doss, Mrs. N. Maithili, Pondicherry, Dr.Panch.Ramalingam, Pondicherry and Mr.Shaheed Khan, Bangalore presented their papers.After the tea break Scientific Session VII – Tsunami and the Role of Educational Psychologists was chaired by Dr.A.M. Sekar, Principal, Achariya College of Education, Pondicherry and co-chaired by Mr.H.Mouhamed Mustafa, French M.P. Jothiramalingam, Annamalai University, Dr. Annamalai Murugan, N.Gopakumar, Pondichery presented their papers. The concurrent Scientific Session VIII - Developing Practical Application of Integral Education was Chaired by Prof. P. Subramanian, Head, Department of Commerce, Periyar Govt Arts College, Cuddalore. Ms. Papia Mukerji, Kolkatta, Ms.Lanka Naresh, Cuddalore, Dhrubari Mahapatra, Orissa and Ms. Ellerine Sievgson, Shillong presented their papers.

The Valedictory Session was held under the chairmanship of Prof. K.V. Kaliappan. Prof. Mamota Das, Professor of Education, Annamalai University delivered a special address. Dr. Panch. Ramalingam, Organising Secretary presented the report and recomendations of the seminar. Justice Dr. David Annoussamy delivered the valedictory address. Dr. D. Dutta Roy, Kolakatta, Prof Shahhed Khan, Bangalore presented the views of the participants and appreciated Dr. Panch. Ramalingam for making the conference arrangements in a wonderful way. Dr.A.Arivunambi, Director of the UGC Academic Staff College, Pondicherry University distributed best paper awards to Mrs. Jennifer Dany Aube, Canada, Prof Shahhed Khan, Bangalore and Mrs. Priyadarshini S. Bokil, Mumbai, Dr. Murasu Nedumaran of Malaysia felicitated Mr T. Ranganathan proposed the vote of thanks.

Best Teacher Award

Prof.Mamota Das, Formerly Dean , Faculty of Education and Prof. and Head, Dept. of Education, Annamalai University and presently Director, UGC-Academic Staff College of the Pondicherry University has instituted a Best Teacher Award carrying a certificate every year.

Best Paper Award

Prof. B. Viswanathan, Dean (Retd.) Faculty of Education and Prof. and Head, Dept. of Psychology, Annamalai University has instituted an award carrying a certificate and a cash of Rs. 1,000/- for the best paper of the year.

Best Book Award

Dr. N. Dharmarajan, Chairman, Subbammal- Narayanaswamy Educational Trust, Pondicherry has instituted an award carrying a certificate and a cash of Rs.1000/- for best book of the year.


Gold Medals

In order to encourage the Psychology students of the Pondicherry University, the Pondicherry Psychology Association is planning to institute two Gold Medals for the outstanding student in BA psychology offered by the Tagore Arts College, Pondicherry and PG Diploma in Guidance and Counseling offered by the Pondicherry University Community College, Pondicherry.

The Pondicherry Psychology Association has rendered considerable service towards the aim and objectives of the association.

  • It has proposed to start a family counselling centre at Madagadipet, Pondicherry.
  • It has proposed to launch a project on memoriad for the students at three levels such as primary, secondary and college/ university students.
